ASTM F1554 Anchor Rods

ASTM F1554 anchor rods secure steel structures to concrete foundations across the utility, transportation, industrial, and commercial construction sectors.

From substation structures and building columns to lighting poles and highway signs, these anchors provide a critical connection between the foundation and the structure above.

What Is ASTM F1554?

ASTM F1554 is a specification for steel anchor bolts and rods used to secure structural supports to concrete foundations. It establishes requirements for chemical composition, mechanical strength, dimensions, and testing, helping ensure the finished anchors meet a defined standard.

F1554 is not a single type of steel. It covers three strength grades: Grade 36, Grade 55, and Grade 105, with the numbers identifying the minimum yield strength in thousands of pounds per square inch (ksi). The specification covers several anchor configurations, including straight rods, bent bolts, headed bolts, and fully threaded rods.

The project engineer specifies the appropriate anchor grade, dimensions, and configuration based on the structure’s design requirements.

Material Grades & Strength

ASTM F1554 anchors are available in three strength grades: 36, 55, and 105. Each grade has specific mechanical requirements, including yield strength and tensile strength. The appropriate grade is determined by the project’s engineering requirements, not simply by selecting the strongest available material.

*Grade 55 is not automatically weldable. When weldability is required, specify ASTM F1554 Grade 55 with Supplementary Requirement S1. Welding should follow the project’s approved requirements and procedures.

Understanding the numbers
- Yield strength: The stress at which steel begins to permanently deform.
- Tensile strength: The maximum tensile stress steel withstands before failure.
- ksi: Thousands of pounds per square inch.

Dimensions & Threading

Anchor rods are manufactured to the diameter, overall length, and thread lengths specified for each project. These dimensions must accommodate the required embedment, projection above the concrete, base plate, and installation hardware. Clearly specifying the threaded length at each end helps ensure sufficient room for nuts, washers, and any required leveling adjustments.

Both methods are permitted under ASTM F1554 when the finished anchors meet the specification and project requirements.

Drawings should identify the nominal diameter, overall length, thread size and pitch, and required thread length at each end. Thread length and projection above concrete are not the same measurement.
